Introduction

The following documentation provides developers with the tools needed to build a decentralized application (dapp) on top of NBA Top Shot. For more information on how to build a dapp, we recommend checking out the Flow documentation and the tutorial Building for Web on Dapper.

What is NBA Top Shot

NBA Top Shot is a blockchain-based digital collectible platform that allows users to purchase, trade, and own officially licensed NBA highlights in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Each highlight is a unique digital item that can be bought, sold, and owned just like a physical collectible. These highlights are called "moments" and they are represented by a digital image or video of an iconic play from a NBA game, that can include information such as the players involved, the date and location of the game, and other details.

Users can purchase these digital collectibles through packs, which are similar to trading card packs. Users can also trade their digital collectibles on a marketplace. The platform has a built-in type system that enables clients to validate their queries, and servers to validate their responses, which makes it more predictable and efficient.

The platform was launched in October 2020 by Dapper Labs, the same company that created CryptoKitties. It quickly gained popularity among NBA fans and collectors and became one of the most successful NFT projects to date. As of January 2021, the platform has seen a growth in terms of sales and users, with some top shots selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
